Being able to walk through a 3D holographic rendering as already a huge technological advancement, but what if you could physically touch one and manipulate it without help from an external program? Researchers around the globe are working on making this a reality, particularly the University of Tsukuba in Japan. Using lasers, mirrors, lenses and smart programming, they’ve made physical interactions with a hologram possible.
3D holographic images are used within mapping and strategy companies, including the military, in order to improve surveillance. These 3D maps provide a more accurate view of battle spaces and terrains to better prepare for missions. Using computerized data, 2D images are turned into high-quality, 3D holographic sheets. These maps are also useful for planning out evacuation and rescue missions.
Fraud and Security
Since holographic technology is quite complex and difficult to create, it’s incredibly helpful within commercial security. Holograms exist in the small silver rectangles of credit cards, visible when you tilt the card from side to side. These security holograms are extremely difficult to replicate illegally, as are the holograms on banknotes.
